We have been spending quality time in Fla. with an eye to partial residence after retirement, and it has been an eye opener. The "pool in a cage" was at first bemusing, but a very little acquaintance with actual daily living in Fla. will sway you in its favor. In a small and compact house, it is a great joy-- aesthetically, it converts the main living space into an outdoor room, a practical thing in Florida but almost no where else on earth. Far from producing a feeling of enclosure, the pool allows the whole house to open up. Many houses are built adjacent to the zillions of natural ponds, effectively giving everyone a water view, a bird watching paradise and a spectacular sunset, but a little protection from bugs, snakes and alligators is a mighty comfortable thing. They are capable of any landscape design element modification a screened porch is. I am absolutely envious of anyone who can wake up and jump into their living room pool. Hurrah!
