No matter where you are in the tristate area you'll run into some traffic, but for sure going against traffice is going to be a fairly reasonable commute. Just bear in mind that lanes get adjusted toward the city in the A.M. thereby leaving less lanes goint to N.J. and vice versa in the P.M.... more
you could take the 1 train to 14th or then hop the 2,3 to 42nd and then connect to grand central. On weekends, you may have some difficulty if they are doing track work. I would suggest an application for your smartphone called nycmate (this is not an advertisement). It lets you know what trains are running with delays. You will be in moderately close walking distance to a number of subway lines if your usual subway line is delayed.... more
This is one of the only places in the USA where you can walk by otherwise normal elderly people on the sidewalk who have never driven a car or had a drivers license. Theres a really good reason for that.... more
others in a similar boat might really want to try a referral service such as bestplace2move.com. I think its free, and it seems to iron out some of these questions.
I agree with Ms. Brocco that without definitive starting & destination points that a precise response is unlikely and with Mr. Honeycutt that Google maps is an alternative source for vehicular access. I can add that Coach USA provides limited service between NY Port Authority on 42nd St and West Point, Visitor's Center on a daily basis at www.coachusa.com. If you needed additional travel times, service is more frequent from Newburgh. You'd need to add about 20 min. subway travel from any of the 145th St stops in east & west Harlem. An added resource would be to go to www.hopstop.com, which will provide public transportation information for NYC, commuter, taxi and foot transportation by inputting start and end adresses and will display approximate travel time according to time of day and inclusive of any service re-routing or service interruptions. The site also provides the options of sending the directions to you via email or cellphone text message.I hope this helps you.... more

While I have found the PATH trains to be reliable, they run on a more limited schedule than MTA buses and subway and serve a very small area. New Jersey Transit is more comparable in terms of service area to the MTA. Its train service is comparable to Metro North and LIRR. It also has extensive bus service that is frequent to many areas, but less so to other areas. As with all vehicle traffic, the bus service is subject to any problems any delays along the route you are traveling.... more
