Whatever rule there may have existed, is no longer valid. What you need to understand when approaching a foreclosure auction is that those others who attend are much more adept at the bidding. More oftentimes than not, a novice or first time bidder will end up with the highest price/bid - which is exactly what you didn't want to begin with.
