I hope you have bought your new home and settled in Weehawken by now. I am a native of Weehawken and lived there for over 29 years. I still return from time to time. Weehawken in a small city but the crime there is very low, hardly any at all. I am sure you will be quite safe there. So want did you do? What happened and where are you within the Short Sale process?
The $1,000 good faith deposit was going to happen, it shows you have interest in the property and gives the homeowner some form of verification that you are a true buyer. Since there is actually no accepted offer there is no reason for you to tie up any further money and I hope you did not.
Did you speak to the Realtor or Attorney involved and make sure that you are not going to be charged for any service if the bank does not accept your offer?

The best way for you to know that is to try to find out what similar units have rented for, if there are any. Have you looked on craigslist? Or spoken with a realtor who does rentals in that building? That would be a good place to start. I can tell you that 1 bedrooms of that size in the nicer buildings in Hoboken top out in the $2000 to $2200 range, depending on if they have parking. Riva Pointe is very nearby and competes with Hoboken for renters.
