Check out Montclair, NJ. It is one of the best suburbs within 30 mins of NYC. You will find the arts, restaurants and everything else you are looking for.

So Justin- you asked this question in November....have you decided on a suburb yet?

Much depends on your price range.............as was already mentioned below....Montclair, Millburn, Maplewood and Morristown are 4 NJ options......all offer the mid town direct train into the city, in addition to walkable towns with restaurants, movies, boutiques and parks..........

Best wishes..........

Most towns in Southern Westchester (below I 287) are close to a Metro North Train and have very walkable downtowns. I Co-Founded the Bike Walk Alliance of Westchester & Putnam to help make these communities more bike and walker friendly. http://www.bwawp.org.
Walkscore.com can also be a good reference but it is best to visit the towns yourself to get a feel for how walkable they are. I would be happy to help in your search. Fee free to call or email me.

Hi, I'm a life long Westchester resident. When it comes to artsy towns, most of the Rivertowns are your best bet. The towns are small, quaint, and have lot's of cool shops and antique places. To get started check out Irvington, Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Sleepy Hollow, Croton, Tarrytown, and Cold Spring which is my personal favorite. They are all artsy, Cold Spring being the most..and all walkable. My office is in Tarrytown, if you would like to setup a

Staten Island's St. George section has become home to a growing community of artists. Manhattan-based Municipal Art Society recently hosted 25 visitors on a tour of the area, which it heralded as “the new Bushwick,” referring to Brooklyn's up-and-coming hot spot. The rents here are much cheaper than other NYC art communities, and St. George is convenient to the Manhattan Ferry. The Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island and the St. George Civic Association have teamed up to produce and market events such as Art@Bay, which attracts media attention to the area.

Much will depend on your budget; consider taking the time and visiting areas of interest more than once; for school information, see link; http://www.greatschools.org/
