Are you looking for a simple way to refresh a room? Painting stripes can be a great way to make any room seem larger and add a little extra flavor. Not sure where to start? Follow these 7 easy steps and you can have sharp looking paint lines in no time.
Apply the main wall color according to the instructions on the can. Wait at least 2 hours before applying a second coat if necessary. Allow this to dry for at least 2–3 days before taping and painting the stripes.
Decide on the size and direction of the stripes you’d like to paint. Using measuring tape, a level and a pencil, mark the top and bottom lines of where each stripe will go. Then draw a line between them using the level. You may need to enlist a helper to hold the level while you draw the line. A laser level also works great.
Place premium painter’s tape along the pencil line, so that when you paint the stripe it will cover the pencil line. Press tightly on the sides of the tape or you will risk getting uneven edges.
Position a straight edge on top of the painter’s tape so that the edges are flush. With an angled brush, paint against the border of the straight edge. This ensures that the stripe’s edge will be clean.
Use a roller to apply a thick stripe. If you’re applying a thin stripe, use an angled brush. Apply the stripe paint color between the taped-off areas. Work in small sections and continue until you’re finished with the stripe.
Allow the paint to dry for an hour and then put on a second coat. Gently remove the tape before the paint is dry. If you wait until it’s fully dry, you may peel off paint with the tape.
You know that happy dance you have been practicing? Now is the time to use it! Celebrate your great looking room and don’t hold back. With stripes this sharp, who could blame you?
