My HGTV Addiction

HGTV shows have been my guilty pleasure for many years, long before I even became a real estate broker.  Now that I'm in the real estate industry, I combine pleasure and work and watch copious hours of HGTV for “research”.  (The Department of Real Estate should count those towards my continuing education.)  With the new year, there are new shows and new episodes of popular series.  Here are my favorites.

Income Property

It is rare enough to find a contractor who is capable, reliable, and good at communication.  The host of Income Property, Scott McGillivray, has all of the above and a business acumen about the rental market.  On the top of all that, he is charming and has an enormous heart for beleaguered homeowners.  All his projects are beautifully done and within an affordable budget.  DIY warriors and flippers alike can learn a lot from Scott, from his technical knowledge to the latest in building materials and home technology, to design ideas that appeal most to buyers.

Selling New York / Selling LA

With the popularity of Selling New York, HGTV rolled out Selling LA last fall and is heavily promoting the show.  Very much like the format of Selling New York, Selling LA follows several top agents selling multi-million dollar luxury properties in the Los Angeles area.  I like the shows because they allow me a glimpse of how the crème de corps real estate agents run their brokerages.  I especially admire the New York brokerage CORE.  They set an exemplary example of how a brokerage should be to compete in the 21st century.  They are professional, collaborative, and combine traditional newspaper advertising and promotional events with envelope pushing idea ideas and technology.

Price it Right

Price it Right is an irreverant new game show that quizzes unsuspecting passersby on home prices around the country.  It's fun and fast paced.  If you pride yourself on knowing home prices like the back of your hand, you'll enjoy this opportunity to prove yourself.  In addition, they also quiz on home and architectural features.  I, for one, delight in learning obscure real estate terms here and there.

-----
Besides my three favorite shows, I have to share one new show that I find quite disagreeable – Love It or List It.  The show has an awkward concept – have the homeowners pay to renovate a home while making the homeowners shop for new one and see whether they choose to stay in the now improved current home or move.  It's a recipe for conflict.  Where the show fails most miserably is the choice of the hosts.

Having enjoyed amazing personalities on HGTV shows, the two co-hosts of the show, Realtor David Visentin and designer Hilary Farr are absolutely horrible.  Neither truly listens to the clients.  David is rudely pushy and competitive and vigorously over-sells every house so much that clients usually get defensive and snarky about the properties.  Hilary doesn't fare any better.  She has a hard time meeting the homeowners’ wish list within their budget.  And, she does not know how to creatively design around architectural and structural issues, as a professional designer should.

The worst part is the constant and ugly bickering between the professionals.  It feels like they care more about winning and drumming up cheap drama than the best interests of their clients.  After suffering a few episodes, I can watch no more.

What is your favorite HGTV show?  Feel free to drop a comment and share.

I'm a fan of property virgins - some of the buyers succeed in finding exactly what they want, and still many others find houses that are adaptable to what they need. So many people out there expect the house to fit exactly to their dreams, and with real estate the way it is, almost everyone is going to have to do something with re-design or re-purposing to make a property work. It's also a real eye-opener to different ways to compromise.

I also like real estate intervention. I am a condo-owner in a 6-mo market at best, and my condo has been on the market for over 3 years now (4 in July). I've truly self-analyzed, feelings aside, money aside, about if it's priced correctly in the area, and watching this show has helped me to be more objective in analyzing my property. I'm hoping this summer is the summer it finally sells!!

I always loved to learn, and this kind of programs help me to learn new things and to watch a different perspective of the things I already know. It also works as a good motivator, because I am a handy man, but sometimes it takes me a little to engage into action, but when I see everybody doing things, then...it powers me inside.

I like Property Virgins and Real Estate Intervention too. Property Virgins now has a new host Egypt Sherrod based in New York. I have to wait and see how it turns out. Mike Aubrey from Real Estate Intervention is my most favorite real estate agent on TV of all time. He is very professional and he is on the money on every distressed property. Despite his no-nonsense approach, he genuinely cares for the homeowners and does everything he can to help them out.

I never got hooked on HGTV.

I'm also an HGTV addict. I watch mostly Income Property, Property Virgins, and House Hunters International. I love learning new ways to renovate/redesign a space within a reasonable budget with Scott (he's not hard on the eyes either). I like that Property Virgins tries to snap first-time homeowners out of their expectation that they'll find their dream home within an unrealistic budget. Finally, I enjoy watching House Hunters International to catch a glimpse into how the housing markets are around the world -- which also taps into my love of travel.

I love Selling New York & Selling LA. Selling LA seems to be more "young & hip" driven. I definitely love to watch Property Virgins and My First Place. I like to see how other agents may handle out of reach expectations with there clients. And seeing first time home buyers mature in there buying process is always great to see.

I kind of like Property Brothers too. Seeing the transformations of some of the homes are great. The only thing I do not like is that they do not show the entire homes renovation. It is usually just the living, dining room, and kitchen.

@Tyler: I am with you on Property Brothers. The Brothers like to say that they can give the home buyers their dream home within their budget. The truth is that the budget only allows for partial remodeling while the rest of house is still old and crappy. And they keep working with home buyers who don't want renovation to begin with. How about they recruiting some home buyers who absolutely love renovation like myself?

I love those shows too! And, if anyone gets their yard crashed by Ahmid, please tell him his soulmate is dying to meet him!

I really thing the HGTV helps our economy! lol People get some great ideas that ultimately winds up in remodels and purchases!!

They should put a date on the shows. I'm always wondering how far underwater they are today.

Tina, thank you for bringing this to the attention of the general public. Sometimes I thought I was the only agent addicted to Real Estate TV. My husband said I need a real estate intervention. I love the idea of CE credits! I've seen them all. Like you, I like learning the values of homes across our nation. It helps me to understand our clients who come from other areas in the value to them. I played Price it Right and surprised myself when I won.

What I like most is seeing how other agents work with their clients.

I haven't gotten a chance to see selling LA yet. I've got to check it out this year.

I'm with you there! I love HGTV, Property Virgins and House Hunters. I'm addicted to Real Estate. Maybe if we petition we can convince them to credit the boob tube time into continuing ed credits.

Hi Tina, I just did a post on my Trulia Blog about the HGTV Dream home here in my local area. http://www.trulia.com/blog/parkcitylifestyle/2012/02/river_meadows_ranch_-_home_to_the_hgtv_dream_home
By Tina Lam, ASP, SFR,  Thu Feb 9 2012, 15:41
Thanks for the contribution, Ben. Since you've seen the house in person, a few pictures of the surrounding neighborhood would be a great addition to the blog. I'd certainly love to see what the area looks like.

Hi Tina,

Strange, but since I have been in realty for the past 10 months, I haven't watched any of these shows that so mystified me previously. I hope to get back to them, but have been too busy! I think I feel it might be too much like working now to watch them, which was never what I would have expected when I entered the biz. H

Tina, after the long hours my partner (and spouse) and I have put and continue to put into real estate, my partner asked if we could wipe out HGTV. And, so we have....
By Ken Allen,  Mon Feb 13 2012, 14:35
Like some of the others who have commented, I just don't have the time for all of these shows.
By Leah Flach,  Tue Feb 14 2012, 08:23
I love House Hunters International as well!
By Tina Hager,  Wed Feb 15 2012, 03:59
I love House Hunters International also. I catch some episodes late at night. I like to think I'm on the search with them looking for a home in an exotic location.
I have to admit I watched HGTV alot more before getting into Real Estate but it is my "go to" channel when nothing else is on.
